Archaeological Site of Ancient Nemea – 10:00 AM
Our journey begins at the Archaeological Site of Ancient Nemea, a place of great historical and mythological significance.
Once home to the Panhellenic Nemean Games, this sacred site was dedicated to Zeus and served as an important athletic and religious center in ancient Greece. The well-preserved ruins include the Temple of Zeus, an impressive structure that once housed a giant statue of the god, and the Ancient Stadium of Nemea, where athletes competed in events similar to those of the Olympic Games.
The site is also closely linked to the myth of Hercules and the Nemean Lion, one of the hero’s Twelve Labors. According to legend, Hercules defeated the monstrous lion with his bare hands, as no weapon could pierce its impenetrable hide. The lion’s slaying marked Hercules’ first labor and cemented Nemea’s place in Greek mythology.
