Itinerary

Ancient Sparta - 9:30 AM

Begin your journey in Ancient Sparta, a city with a history spanning from Neolithic times to the late Roman era. Famous for its fearless warriors, Sparta was the main rival of Athens, shaping much of Greek history through legendary battles and conflicts.

Sparta is best known for King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans, who stood against the vast Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae. However, even before Leonidas, Sparta was home to Menelaus and Helen, the figures behind the Trojan War. According to myth, Paris, Prince of Troy, abducted Helen, leading to the legendary conflict that inspired Homer’s epic poems.

Modern Sparta is a charming city with broad streets, neoclassical buildings, and a beautiful natural setting, surrounded by olive and orange groves along the Eurotas River. Here, you will visit the Archaeological Museum of Sparta (Tuesdays closed), which houses artifacts spanning from prehistoric to Roman times, offering an incredible glimpse into the city’s past.

Mystras - 11:30 AM

Next, step into the medieval splendor of Mystras, one of Greece’s most captivating historical sites. Built on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, Mystras was the last stronghold of the Byzantine Empire, serving as its final capital after the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Wander through this UNESCO World Heritage Site, exploring:

  • The Frankish Castle at the top of the fortified city, offering breathtaking views.
  • The Palace of the Despots (Anaktora), once home to Byzantine rulers.
  • Agioi Theodoroi and other Byzantine churches adorned with stunning frescoes.
  • The Monastery of Pantanassa, a functioning nunnery, still active today.
  • The Church of Saint Dimitrios, where Constantine Palaiologos, the last Byzantine emperor, was crowned.

You’ll be enchanted by the medieval atmosphere, the cobblestone paths, and the impressive Byzantine architecture that make Mystras one of Greece’s most treasured historical sites.

Traditional Greek Lunch – 2:00 PM

After exploring Mystras, enjoy a delicious meal at a traditional Greek taverna nestled at the foot of the historic town.

Savor authentic Greek flavors made with fresh, local ingredients while relaxing in the charming village atmosphere. (Lunch price included.)

Museum of Olives and Olive Oil – 3:30 PM

End your tour with a visit to the Museum of Olives and Olive Oil, where you’ll discover the deep cultural and economic significance of the olive in Greece.

Learn about the history, technology, and production of olive oil, an essential part of the Mediterranean diet.

The museum offers a fascinating look at how olive oil shaped Greek society from antiquity to modern times. (Tuesdays closed)
